How Can I Help?
Sun Prairie Emergency Food Pantry completely relies on help from others to stock the pantry and serve neighbors in need. There are many ways to help. We welcome your time and talents, financial resources, and food donations.
Volunteers are vital to our mission. Sun Prairie Emergency Food Pantry depends on volunteers to operate—we are 100% volunteer run! Consider being part of a team that in 2020:
- Put in 17,638 hours.
- Recovered 360,000 pounds of food from area stores.
- Served 20,343 individuals, over half of which were under 18 or over 60 years of age.
If you are interested in volunteering in an environment that likes to have fun, while showing compassion for others, we are recruiting volunteers to work at the pantry during open hours.
COVID-19 changed our methods for distributing food, currently we do not allow clients into the food pantry. This change also affects the work volunteers do. We are seeking volunteers to work as greeters and shoppers.
Greeter: Two people serve as greeters on every shift. The greeter fills out an information sheet for each client and provides it to the registrar who enters data into the registration system. Greeters work directly with clients outdoors. The role can require moderate to heavy lifting Greeters take groceries out to the clients’ vehicles for them to load if they are able.
Shopper: Three people per shift serve as shoppers. A shopper fills client orders based on the information greeters collect. Shoppers are on their feet the entire shift and collect food from a pantry we rearranged for easy access and efficiency. Shoppers weigh the cart before handing it off to greeters. Light lifting may be required.
The food pantry could use volunteer help for all shifts, especially on Saturdays.
Though the COVID shopping process is easy to follow, we provide a brief orientation before you start.
Who can volunteer?
Volunteers should be 18 or older and interested in helping others in a compassionate and welcoming way. We seek people from all backgrounds and diverse volunteers are encouraged to join our team. Bilingual skills are especially helpful.
We require volunteers to do a self-health assessment before every shift. Volunteers wear masks and gloves (available at the pantry) and maintain social distancing when working with clients. We encourage frequent hand washing and sanitizing procedures.
Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Sun Prairie Emergency Food Pantry! We look forward to getting to know you better.
